How the finder works

  1. Illustration of searching assisted living by city or ZIP on a phone

    Search by city or ZIP

Pick the care your parent needs and type a city or ZIP. Every licensed home in the state record shows up, nearest first.

  2. Illustration of checking an assisted living licence and its inspection results

    Check the licence and inspections

Each home shows its licence, beds and what state or federal inspectors cited, with a link to the record itself.

  3. Illustration of a family asking an assisted living home how to pay

    Ask how to pay

See which homes are on the Medicaid waiver list, then call and ask for their rates in writing.

Who pays for assisted living

Most families pay for assisted living themselves, from savings, a pension, Social Security or the sale of a house. Medicare doesn't pay the monthly fee. Medicaid can pay for the care part through a state waiver, but not the rent or the meals, and only in a facility that takes the waiver.

That last point narrows the search a lot. Only 407 of Florida's 3,021 licensed ALFs are on the state's Medicaid waiver list, about 1 in 7 (our count of the AHCA roll, October 2026). In California, 1,045 of the 8,508 licensed homes we list are on the Assisted Living Waiver facility list.

Where every fact comes from

Each facility row comes from a public record, not from the facility's own marketing. Florida assisted living comes from the licence roll of the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). California homes come from the Community Care Licensing Division of the Department of Social Services. Nursing homes in every state come from the CMS Provider Information file, October 2026 release, with each home's star rating as CMS publishes it.

Questions families ask

What happens to elderly who can't afford assisted living?

Most turn to Medicaid. A state waiver can pay for care in an assisted living home that takes it, and Medicaid pays for a nursing home when a person qualifies on income, assets and care needs. Veterans may get extra help from the VA. Our guide to paying with no money goes through each route.

Does Medicare pay for assisted living?

No. Medicare doesn't pay for long-term care, so it doesn't cover the rent, the meals or the daily personal care. It still pays for covered medical care, and for a short skilled nursing stay after a qualifying hospital stay.

How much does assisted living cost per month?

The US median is $6,200 a month for a private one-bedroom unit, from the CareScout Cost of Care Survey 2025. It varies a lot by state, so check the median in your state.

What is the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?

Assisted living gives help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing and medication, in a home-like setting. A nursing home gives skilled nursing care around the clock. Our assisted living vs nursing home guide sets them side by side.

Who licenses assisted living facilities in Florida?

The Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). It licenses every ALF, inspects them and publishes the results. Each Florida listing on this site links to its AHCA record.
